Ingredient Bins & Bulk Storage

Ingredient bins are purpose-built containers used in commercial kitchens to hold dry goods, grains, flour, sugar and similar bulk ingredients. They typically feature tight-fitting lids, smooth interior surfaces and a footprint sized to fit under benches or on shelving. Bulk storage goes a step further, covering larger floor-standing units, gastronorm containers and sealed pails designed to hold significant quantities between deliveries.

The range covers large-capacity floor bins from Simply Stainless, stackable gastronorm containers from Hygiplas, garnish and condiment centres from San Jamar, ingredient dispensers from Crown Industries, food-safe pails, Kilner preserve lids and labelling consumables from Cambro. Vogue and Matfer Bourgeat round out the range with additional storage options suited to both prep areas and front-of-house service stations.

A large floor bin works best for high-volume dry goods you cycle through quickly, such as flour or rice, because you can scoop directly without lifting heavy bags. Countertop containers and gastronorm units are better for mise en place, garnishes and prepped ingredients that your team needs to reach fast during service. Many kitchens run both: a floor bin for bulk and smaller sealed containers at the station.

Think about how often you take deliveries and how much of each ingredient you use between them. A busy bakery burning through flour daily will need a much larger capacity than a cafe topping up once a week. Most units in this range sit somewhere between around 20 litres and 120 litres. Buy slightly larger than your current need — it is easier to leave a bin half-full than to run short mid-prep.

Many models are designed with standard bench heights and cool-room shelving in mind. The Simply Stainless SS26.BIN, for example, is sized at 500 mm, which slots under most commercial benches. Gastronorm containers from Hygiplas follow standard GN dimensions, so they drop straight into bain-maries, cool drawers and existing shelving frames. Always check the product dimensions against your specific setup before ordering.

Many of the polypropylene and food-grade plastic containers in this range are rated for refrigerated and frozen storage. Hygiplas Click PP gastronorm containers are a common choice for cool-room use. Check each product's listed temperature range before placing product into a freezer environment, as not all lids and clips are designed for the same conditions. When in doubt, the product page will state the suitable temperature range.

Empty the bin fully before cleaning rather than topping up over old stock. Wash interior surfaces with warm water and an approved food-safe detergent, then rinse thoroughly and allow to air-dry before refilling. Smooth-walled polypropylene and stainless steel surfaces resist odour absorption and are far easier to sanitise than textured finishes. Cambro labelling rolls help your team track fill dates so nothing sits longer than it should.

Colour coding is one of the simplest ways to prevent cross-contamination and misidentification during a fast service. Hygiplas Click containers come with seven colour clips, letting you assign a colour to each allergen group, protein type or day of the week. Cambro food storage labels add a written record. Together they reduce the chance of a team member grabbing the wrong container under pressure.

Pricing varies depending on material, capacity and brand.
