Dunnage Racks & Material Handling

A dunnage rack is a low-profile platform that raises food, beverage containers or equipment off the floor, keeping product away from moisture, pests and cleaning chemicals. Health codes in most Australian states require stored food to be held above floor level, so a dunnage rack is a practical compliance tool as much as a storage aid. They are a standard fixture in cool rooms, dry stores and prep areas.

The range covers slotted and solid-top dunnage racks, adjustable dish caddies, stainless steel mobile frames, individual castors and castor kits, and dolly accessories. Cambro covers caddies and slotted racks, Simply Stainless handles fabricated dunnage racks, Rieber supplies mobile stainless frames, and Hoshizaki and Caterrax round out the castor and mobility side of the range.

Slotted tops let water and debris drain away, which makes them the better choice for cool rooms, wet prep areas and anywhere you hose down the floor regularly. Solid tops give a flat, stable surface that suits lighter boxed goods or dry-store items where drainage is less of a concern. If your kitchen runs both wet and dry storage zones, it is worth picking the surface type to match each area rather than buying one style for everything.

Start with the floor footprint you can spare, then work out the height clearance you need underneath for mop access and airflow. Simply Stainless fabricates racks at set lengths such as 1500 mm, while Cambro offers models with adjustable or compact formats. Most operators find that measuring the heaviest load they will place on the rack, then cross-checking the product dimensions, is a more reliable method than guessing by room size alone.

Yes. Castor kits from Hoshizaki and wheel kits from Caterrax are stocked here specifically for this purpose. Kits vary in wheel diameter and overall height, so check that the castor height you choose still keeps your rack or frame within the clearance limits of your shelving bay or cool room doorway. Rieber mobile frames are designed from the outset to roll, so they pair naturally with the castor accessories in this range.

Stainless steel racks from Simply Stainless and mobile frames from Rieber handle the temperature swings of refrigerated and frozen environments without the corrosion risk that bare steel carries. Cambro polymer racks are also rated for chilled storage. That said, always check the specific product listing for the temperature range it is designed for, as not every model in the range is built for blast-freeze conditions.

A dish caddy is a column-based holder designed to store and transport stacked plates or trays in a way that protects them from chips and keeps them organised for service. Cambro makes several caddy formats here, including the S-Series adjustable caddy and the compact four-column model. A dunnage rack, by contrast, is a flat platform for bulk storage of boxes, bags or containers — the two products solve different problems and are often used together in the same kitchen.

Polymer racks from Cambro can be rinsed down with a hose or run through a commercial dishwasher in some configurations. Stainless steel racks and frames from Simply Stainless and Rieber wipe down easily with a food-safe sanitiser and a cloth. Avoid abrasive scourers on stainless surfaces as they scratch the finish and make future cleaning harder. Castors should be checked periodically for debris caught in the wheel housing, which can lock up a swivel if left uncleared.
