Coolrooms & Walk-In Refrigeration

A commercial coolroom is a dedicated refrigerated enclosure large enough for staff to enter and store bulk product. Unlike a reach-in fridge, a walk-in holds far greater volume and maintains consistent temperatures across the entire space. Modular versions, like those from Misa, are assembled from insulated panels on-site, so they fit into existing buildings without major structural work.

You'll find modular coolrooms for chilled storage, modular freezer rooms for sub-zero product, and Freeblock insulated panel systems for custom configurations. Misa supplies the full range of modular rooms in multiple footprint sizes. Cambro and Atlas round out the offering with complementary cold-storage solutions suited to cafes, restaurants and catering operations.

Choose a coolroom if your primary need is chilled storage for fresh produce, dairy and beverages. Go with a modular freezer room if you need to hold frozen protein, ice cream or long-term frozen stock at sub-zero temperatures. Some operations buy both side by side. Your menu, order frequency and available floor space are the deciding factors, not brand or price alone.

Start with your peak stock volume, not your average week. Factor in the number of covers you run, how often deliveries arrive, and whether you store dry goods separately. Misa modular rooms are available in a range of widths and depths, with both 2M and 2.4M height options, so you can match the footprint to your floor plan rather than compromising on capacity.

Freeblock panels are individual insulated wall and ceiling sections that let you build or extend a coolroom to a custom shape. They suit venues with irregular floor plans or those expanding an existing cold room. Misa's Freeblock range — including the FB06N/10, FB13N/10, FB20N/10 and FB28N/10 — gives your installer the flexibility to design around your space rather than around a fixed room size.

Most modular coolrooms are designed to sit on an existing level concrete floor, which is the most common scenario in commercial kitchens. The floor must be flat, structurally sound and able to handle the combined weight of the unit, refrigeration equipment and stored product. Your installer will confirm the slab specification during the site survey before assembly begins.

Modular coolrooms require a licensed refrigeration mechanic for the refrigeration circuit and electrical connections. Installation is arranged separately from your purchase — Chefs Depot ships the unit to your site and your team coordinates the trade fit-out. We recommend lining up your installer before the unit arrives so the job moves straight from delivery to assembly without downtime.

Wipe down interior panels regularly with a food-safe sanitiser and check door seals for splits or gaps that let warm air in. Coil and condenser cleaning should be scheduled with your refrigeration mechanic, typically a few times per year depending on use. Keep the floor clear of product that blocks airflow, and log temperature checks daily so you catch any drift before it affects your stock.

Yes — Cambro's range of food storage and shelving solutions pairs directly with walk-in coolroom interiors. Cambro products stocked at Chefs Depot are designed for cold and wet environments, so the materials hold up without rusting or warping. Fitting out your coolroom with the right shelving maximises usable cubic space and keeps your team working efficiently during busy service.

Pricing varies with room size, height option and refrigeration configuration. Compact Misa modular rooms sit at a lower price point than the larger multi-bay configurations, and Freeblock panels are priced individually so you only buy what your build requires.
